With pale blue brushwork on a snowy white porcelain glaze, the scenery of a winter landscape with mountains, forests, and springs is depicted. Amidst the desolate and bleak world, one sees a realm of life that is detached and self-affirming, an escape from worldly affairs. This is not a casual creation by Jingdezhen artisans. After the tumultuous dynastic changes of the 17th century, many descendants and scholars of the Ming dynasty, unwilling to serve as subjects under the foreign Qing rule and suffering the pain of a fallen state and broken homes, chose seclusion in the mountains, living a life apart from the world. In these winter snow scenes, one can almost see the shadow of Bada Shanren and the Yuan Four Masters, who also lived under foreign rule. Unlike the typical Kangxi porcelain paintings, which mostly feature themes like the emperor’s consorts and sons, the Moon Palace, and ascending ranks, this particular snow scene ‘General’s Jar’ with its depiction of a winter landscape is extraordinarily rare. The porcelain is pure white with a uniform body, the blue outlines are delicate yet robust, and the original pearl-knobbed lid is exceptionally hard to come by, making it an extremely rare specially commissioned Kangxi porcelain artwork, about 32 cm in height. Aside from two areas of glaze contraction on the lid, it is nearly in perfect condition.
